Transit / Transfer passengers are those with a confirmed flight ticket who have a layover of less than 24 hours at any point between the departure and arrival Istanbul Airport, and continue their journey with the same airline or a different one.
Are you transit / transfer passenger in Istanbul Airport?
In simple terms, if you are changing flights at another airport between your departure and final destination airports, then yes, you are a transfer/transit passenger. You can determine which transit passenger category you are in and get information in the explanations below.
International to International (Turkish Airlines and Single Ticket)
Welcome to Istanbul Airport. After leaving the aircraft with your hand luggage, you can follow the INTERNATIONAL TRANSFERS signs to reach the security checkpoint. Depending on the distance of the gate, your walking distance may take 15-20 minutes.
After passing through the security check, you are now in the international departures terminal. Your luggage? Don’t worry, Turkish Airlines will transfer your check-in luggage to your next flight. If you have time, you can eat and drink something in this area, or do some shopping. You can find out from the flight information screens which gate your departure flight will pick up passengers from, and go to your gate when boarding begins. That’s all. The approximate duration will be 1 hour, excluding free time for shopping or food/drink.
International to International (Turkish Airlines and Not a Single Ticket)
Turkish Airlines may not be able to issue you a single ticket due to some operational reasons. In this case, your baggage will not have been checked in until your final stop, and you will need to collect your baggage from the conveyor belt at Istanbul Airport and check in for your next flight.
If you have two different tickets for arrival and departure, after leaving the plane with your hand luggage, you must first pass through the passport control by following the BAGGAGE CLAIM sign. After passport control, you can collect your baggage and proceed to the departure passenger terminal, which is the upper floor. After checking in your baggage for your departure flight, you will pass through passport control again and enter the lounge/ shopping shade, then you can learn from the flight information screens which gate your departure flight will pick up passengers from and go to your gate when boarding begins.
Since you have two different tickets, the time you will spend between your arrival and departure gates will be approximately 90 minutes. Remember to use your time wisely.
International to International (Not Turkish Airlines and Not a Single Ticket)
If you arrived at Istanbul airport with an airline other than Turkish Airlines and your connecting flight is with an airline other than Turkish Airlines, you will have two different tickets.
In this case, you should first collect your luggage at arrival terminal as in the previous explanation, check in for the next flight at departure terminal and go through passport control to your boarding gate. You will need approximately 90 minutes.
Domestic to International (Turkish Airlines)
You are lucky because both of your flights are with Turkish Airlines. First, leave the plane with your hand luggage, then follow the INTERNATIONAL TRANSFERS sign to the international international terminal. Don’t worry about your luggage. Turkish Airlines will transfer you to your international flight. If you have time, taste Turkish food in a lounge. You can easily manage your time by checking your gate and boarding time from the flight information screens. Have a nice flight.
Domestic to International (Not Turkish Airlines)
You have arrived at Istanbul Airport on a Turkish Airlines domestic flight and have an international connecting flight with another airline. The procedure you need to follow is quite simple. First, collect your check-in baggage from the domestic arrivals terminal and take the elevator to the international departures floor. Here, check your baggage in with the airline of your next flight and go through passport control to your gate.
